Urgent Prescription Notices and Changes

PLEASE NOTE: Plan Change

Please read this letter carefully as it contains important information about an upcoming prescription plan change that may affect you or a covered dependent.

Beginning January 1, 2018, Chouest Group Health is changing the way it covers opioids (oxycodone, hydrocodone, etc.) and benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium, etc.) due to the lack of credible safety data on the long-term use of these medications.

The plan will no longer pay for the ongoing, routine use of these medications, and will only pay for these medications for short-term use (14 days or less) when prescribed for the treatment of acute pain (opioids) or acute anxiety (benzodiazepines), and will only pay for one 14-day course of these medications for each plan year.

In addition the plan will not pay for an opioid and a benzodiazepine to be filled at the same time. There must be a 30-day period of time between the processing and payment of these two classes of medication.

There may be cases where the treatment of acute pain or anxiety may occur more than once in a calendar year, and in those cases an appeal may be warranted if medication coverage is denied. Appeals should be faxed to Norma Bonvillain at (985) 601-4209.
