Unlicensed Engineer

The unlicensed engineer is responsible for carrying out orders from the captain. The unlicensed engineer's duties include cleaning the engine room and all machinery. The unlicensed engineer must be familiar with the use of hand tools and the machinery layout of the vessel.

Functions

The unlicensed engineer will:

  • Examine machinery for specified pressure and flow of lubricants.
  • Fill oil cups on machinery with grease and lubricating oil according to machinery lubrication instructions.
  • Oil and grease moving parts, such as gears, shafts and bearings of engines and auxiliary equipment used to propel maritime vessels.
  • Read pressure and temperature gauges, recording data in the engineering log.
  • Clean and paint the machinery space and all the machinery in it.
  • Be responsible for keeping all machinery spaces clean and tidy.
  • Assist on deck with cargo handling operations.
  • Assist in launching of survival craft during times of emergency.
  • Assist in tying up the vessel when needed.
  • Perform any other additional duties that may be required or assigned.

The unlicensed engineer may also lubricate deck machinery when the vessel is unloading cargo.

Emergency Response Functions

The unlicensed engineer will:

  • Secure the watertight or gas tight integrity of the vessel during an emergency.
  • Maintain and test emergency equipment in the engine room.
  • Start the bilge and/or fire pumps.
  • Oversee shoring/emergency repairs.
  • Oversee the securing of engineering spaces/equipment for heavy weather. The unlicensed engineer will assist the mate in securing cargo and deck equipment.
  • Operate the fixed fire fighting systems.
  • Assist on deck in a man overboard crisis.

Supervisory Functions

The unlicensed engineer will:

  • Oversee safety procedures on deck during transfer of fuel or other combustibles.
  • Train and supervise all engineering personnel.
  • Train the crew in damage control procedures during drills as directed by the captain.
  • Train engineering officers and unlicensed personnel in watch standing procedures, ensuring they are competent and completely familiar with their duties and responsibilities.
  • Be responsible for supporting the ongoing safety program on board the vessel by training members of the engineering department in the wearing of protective clothing and their duties during emergencies. The unlicensed engineer will stress the use of common sense and the need for alertness while carrying out assignments.
  • Perform any other additional duties that may be required or assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years' engine room experience
  • Must possess a valid U.S. Coast Guard merchant mariner's document (Z-card) with minimum endorsement of OS, wiper, SD (FH)
  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • USCG STCW 95 basic safety training
  • High school diploma preferred but not required
  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen, background check and Safe Gulf class
  • Subject to random drug screening
  • Shall be capable of working offshore in harsh weather environments for periods of 3 to 6 weeks
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work for crew changes

Compensation

  • Based on employee's U.S. Coast Guard documents and type of vessel
  • $270-$300 per day
  • Main schedule of 28 on, 14 off
  • Free U.S. Coast Guard STCW and upgrade classes offered at our training facility
  • Travel pay based on direct distance from employee's residence to our main office
