Ordinary seamen are responsible for keeping the vessel in a clean, tidy condition and work under the direction of the mate. Ordinary seamen must be familiar with all necessary deck functions including mooring and securing the vessel. Ordinary seamen perform a variety of duties to preserve painted surfaces of the ship and to maintain lines, running gear and cargo handling gear in safe operating condition.

Functions

The ordinary seaman will:

  • Handle lines to moor vessel to wharves, another vessel or rig.
  • Chip, clean, paint and remove rust spots from the deck, superstructure and sides of the ship using hand or air chipping hammer and wire brush.
  • Sweep and wash decks using a broom, brushes, mops and hose to remove oil, dirt and debris.
  • Sweep and mop the vessel interior.
  • Maintain entire vessel interior including sanitation and lavatories.
  • Lubricate deck machinery and equipment.
  • Splice and repair cables and ropes using hand tools.
  • Stand watch from the bow of the ship or wing of the bridge for obstructions in path of ship.
  • Assist the mate in the launching of survival craft during emergencies.
  • Perform any other additional duties that may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must possess a valid USCG merchant mariner's document (Z-card) with minimum endorsement of OS, wiper, SD (FH)
  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC card)
  • USCG STCW 95 basic safety training
  • Due to high volume of applicants, 6 months' prior vessel experience is preferred but not required
  • High school diploma preferred but not required
  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen, background check and Safe Gulf class
  • Subject to random drug screening
  • Must be capable of working offshore in harsh weather environments for periods of 3 to 6 weeks
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work for crew changes

Compensation

  • Based on employee's USCG documents and type of vessel
  • $170 per day
  • Free USCG STCW and upgrade classes offered at our training facility
  • Housing and meals provided during training or crew change days
  • Travel pay based on direct distance from employee's residence to our main office
