Responsibilities
The ship tacker welds short beads at points specified by the fitter or fitter foreman along overlapping or adjoining edges to hold workpiece in place for final welding.
Essential Job Functions
The ship tacker
- Assists fitter or fitter-welder to position, align, and fit together plates, structural shapes, piping, and weldments preparatory to assembly into fabricated products.
- Holds, positions, and reads tape measure to assist in layout.
- Uses hammers, wedges, pry bars, and come-a-longs to align parts. Positions and turns clamps.
- Grinds or chips rough edges, surplus weld, rust or scale, using portable grinder or air chipper.
- Sets up welding leads from welding machine to the proximity of where work is to be performed.
- Selects proper electrode or electrode wire.
- Tack welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and overhead positions.
- Manually guides electrode along weld line as specified by fitter. Examines weld for proper bead size and characteristics.
- May mark reference lines or locations that are to be cut or drilled.
- May use cutting torch to cut materials or scrap.
- Cleans up area, picking up scrap, sweeping, and returning all unused materials and supplies.
- May be required to perform roustabout work when necessary.
- Assists fitter in installing packing, gaskets, liners, bearings, doors, hatches, brackets, shafts, wheels, rudders, coolers, anodes, and other structural accessories.
- May use hand or power tools.
- May operate overhead cranes and company vehicles.
Working Conditions
Scheduled workdays cover Monday through Friday. Weekends and holidays as required. Works in all kinds of weather. Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. May be required to perform work at a remote location other than at shipyard facility. Subject to ultraviolet light, electrical hazards, vibration, noise, and a variety of other physical conditions, such as the proximity to moving mechanical parts, working at heights greater than six feet, and working over water. May be required to work alone and in confined spaces. Subject to very dramatic temperature changes. Also present are fumes, smoke, dust, gases, chemicals, and hydrocarbons. Protective clothing, hearing and eye protection, hard hats, safety shoes or boots, and respiratory protection are all to be worn accordingly.
Essential Job Requirements
The ship tacker must
- Be able to pass company-specified performance or standards test.
- Be able to read and write alphabetically and numerically.
- Have attended vocational, technical school, or high school or have completed commercial or on-the-job training.
- Be able to provide verifiable references of past work experience.
Physical Requirements
The ship tacker position requires repetitive sequences that require balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger manipulation, grasping, feeling, seeing, hearing, speaking, and an acute sense of smell.
The U. S. Dept. of Labor classifies this job as heavy work, exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for medium work.
