The roustabout performs general labor on ships, boats, drydocks, fab shops, and around the shipyard facility or at remote locations to perform work that is related to shipyard operations.

Essential Job Functions

The roustabout:

  1. Works with blaster/painters, removing scale, sand, paint, grease, tar, rust, and dirt from surfaces in preparation to be painted.
  2. Shovels or pours abrasives such as sand, grit, or steel shot of specified grade into the machine hopper.
  3. Masks specified areas of objects to protect from over-blast or overspray.
  4. Loads parts on racks and removes parts from racks after blasting and painting has been completed.
  5. Drags hoses, lines, paint pots, and other equipment into position around work area.
  6. May blast or spray paint moderately. May paint with brushes or rollers also.
  7. May work in confined areas such as tanks or containers, performing various tasks such as cleaning bulkheads, bottoms, walls, tank tops, double bottoms, etc., using hand or pressure washing equipment. Picks up miscellaneous trash, pumps out excess water, fuel, oil, or chemicals. May also shovel sand into containers and remove from area.
  8. Cleans and smooths surfaces using sandpaper, scraper, sanding machines, and electric and pneumatic grinders or buffers.
  9. Mixes components of paint to obtain proper consistency and color according to specifications usually by oral instruction from blaster/painter or supervisor.
  10. Sets up ventilators, exhaust units, ladders, stages, and scaffolding and removes when job is completed.
  11. Performs various other duties such as the cleaning and maintenance of blasting and painting equipment, mowing grass, sanitary cleanup, dig holes and ditches, scrape barnacles, pick up and store hoses, lines, cable, etc., transport tools, materials, and supplies. May also pick up trash, empty trash cans, and sweep. May return any excess supplies for proper storage or disposal.
  12. May perform clean-up work in all areas of the facility.
  13. May use overhead cranes and operate company vehicles and equipment.

Working Conditions

Scheduled workdays cover Monday through Friday. Weekends and holidays as required. May be required to work at remote locations other than at shipyard facility. Works in all kinds of weather. Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. May be required to perform work at a remote location other than at shipyard facility. Subject to ultraviolet light, electrical hazards, vibration, noise, and a variety of other physical conditions, such as the proximity to moving mechanical parts, working at heights greater than six feet, and working over water. May be required to work alone and in confined spaces. Subject to very dramatic temperature changes. Also present are fumes, smoke, dust, gases, chemicals, and hydrocarbons. Protective clothing, hearing and eye protection, hard hats, safety shoes or boots, and respiratory protection are all to be worn accordingly.

Physical Requirements

The roustabout position requires repetitivesequences that require balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger manipulation, grasping, feeling, seeing, hearing, speaking and an acute sense of smell.

This position is classified as very heavy work. Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for heavy work.
