Roustabout

The roustabout will perform general labor on ships, boats, drydock, fab shops, around the shipyard facility, and/or at remote locations. The roustabout will perform work that is related to shipyard operations.

Working Conditions

Scheduled days cover Monday through Friday with weekends and holidays as required. The roustabout may be required to work at remote locations other than at the shipyard facility. The roustabout works in all kinds of weather. The roustabout is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions, electrical and mechanical hazards, ultraviolet light, vibration, noise, working on scaffolding and ladders at height, working over water, working alone in confined spaces, and very dramatic temperature changes such as when entering or exiting a tank. Fumes, smoke, dust, gases, chemicals, and hydrocarbons are also present in the work environment. Protective clothing, hearing and eye protection, hard hats, safety shoes or boots, and respiratory protection are all to be worn accordingly.

Essential Job Functions (listing most important first)

The roustabout:

  1. Works with blaster/painters removing scale, sand, paint, grease, tar, rust, and dirt from surfaces in preparation for paint.
  2. Shovels or pours abrasives such as sand, grit, or steel shot of specified grade into machine hopper.
  3. Masks specified areas of objects to protect from over blast or overspray.
  4. Loads parts on racks and removes parts from racks after blasting and painting has been completed.
  5. Drags hoses, lines, paint pots, and other equipment into position around work area.
  6. May blast or spray paint moderately. The roustabout may paint with brushes or rollers also.
  7. May work in confined areas, such as tanks or containers, performing various tasks, such as cleaning bulkheads, bottoms, walls, tank tops, double bottoms, etc., using hand or pressure-washing equipment. The roustabout will pick up miscellaneous trash, pump out excess water, fuel, oil, or chemicals. The roustabout may also shovel sand into containers and remove from area.
  8. Cleans and smooths surfaces using sandpaper, scraper, sanding machines, and electric and pneumatic grinders or buffers.
  9. Mixes components of paint to obtain proper consistency and color according to specifications usually given by oral instruction from a blaster/painter or supervisor.
  10. Sets up ventilators, exhaust units, ladders, stages, and scaffolding, removing when job is completed.
  11. Performs various other duties, such as the cleaning and maintenance of blasting and painting equipment; mowing grass; sanitary cleanup; digging holes and ditches; scraping barnacles; picking up and storing hoses, lines, cables, etc.; and transporting tools, materials, and supplies. The roustabout may also pick up trash, empty trash cans, and sweep. The roustabout may return any excess supplies for proper storage or disposal.
  12. May perform cleanup work in all areas of the facility.
  13. May use overhead cranes and operate company vehicles and equipment.

The roustabout must be able to read and write alphabetically and numerically.

Physical Requirements

The roustabout must be able to perform repetitive sequences that require balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger manipulation, grasping, feeling, seeing, hearing, speaking, and an acute sense of smell.

This position is classified as very heavy work — exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for heavy work.
