The licensed assistant engineer assists the chief engineer in carrying out many of the engineer functions. It is extremely important that the assistant engineer be well acquainted with all the engineering systems on board the vessel as he is in charge of the engine room department while the chief engineer is off watch.
Marine Functions
The licensed assistant engineer will:
- Maintain an engine room watch while the chief engineer is off duty.
- Maintain all hand tools and electrical or pneumatic tools in a good working order.
- Help gather all vital machinery readings.
- Keep all machinery spaces clean and tidy.
Emergency Response Functions
The licensed assistant engineer will:
- Oversee the engine room equipment and all engineering personnel.
- Secure the watertight or gas tight integrity of the vessel during an emergency.
- Maintain and test all emergency equipment in the engine room.
- Start the bilge and/or fire pumps.
- Oversee shoring/emergency repairs.
- Oversee the securing of engineering spaces/equipment for heavy weather and assist the mate in securing cargo and deck equipment.
- Provide first aid to injured personnel according to his training or at the direction of the captain.
- Operate the fixed fire fighting systems.
- Assist on deck in a man overboard crisis.
Supervisory Functions
The licensed assistant engineer will:
- Supervise the engine room oilers in their duties.
- Lead the engine room fire squad.
- Perform any other additional duties that may be required or assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- Must possess the following valid USCG documentation:
- License with minimum rating of:
- Designated duty engineer of at least 4000 HP and 3000 ITC tonnage
- Third assistant engineer of at least 4000 HP and 3000 ITC tonnage
- STCW 95 with "Engineer Officer in Charge of a Watch" endorsement
- MMD (Z-card)
- License with minimum rating of:
- Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
- High school diploma preferred but not required
- Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen, background check and Safe Gulf class
- Subject to random drug screening
- Shall be capable of working offshore in harsh weather environments for periods of 3 to 6 weeks
- Must have reliable transportation to and from work for crew changes
Compensation
- Based on employee's USCG documents and type of vessel
- $475 per day
- Main schedule of 28 on, 14 off
- Free USCG STCW and upgrade classes offered at our training facility
- Travel pay based on direct distance from employee's residence to our main office
