Able seaman (AB) may work as watchstander, day worker, or a combination of these roles. The AB is also responsible for keeping the vessel in a clean, tidy condition and work under the direction of the mate. At sea, the AB watchstander's duties include standing watch as helmsman and lookout while underway. As day worker, the AB performs daily maintenance to preserve painted surfaces of the ship and to maintain lines, running gear and cargo handling gear in safe operating condition. The AB may be called on to use emergency, lifesaving, damage control and safety equipment. Able seamen perform all operations connected with the launching of lifesaving equipment.
Watchstanding Functions
Able seaman will:
- Stand watch at the bow or on wing of the bridge to look for obstructions in path of vessel.
- Man the wheel on the bridge as helmsman or use an emergency steering apparatus to steer vessel as directed by captain or mate.
- Stand security-related watches, such as gangway or anchor watch.
General Functions
Able seaman will:
- Break out, rig, overhaul and stow cargo-handling gear, stationary rigging and running gear.
- Maintain and operate life boats, lifesaving gear, and emergency and damage control gear.
- Operate deck machinery, such as windlass, winches or cranes.
- Chip, clean, paint and remove rust spots from deck, superstructure and sides of ship using hand or air chipping hammer and wire brush.
- Potentially stow or remove cargo from ship's hold.
- Maintain the interior of the vessel including sanitation and lavatories.
- Splice and repair cables and ropes using hand-tools.
- Perform any other additional duties that may be required or assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- Applicants must possess the following valid USCG documentation:
- MMD (Z-card) with minimum endorsement of AB-OSV, wiper, SD (FH)
- STCW 95 endorsed with "Able Seaman or Rating Forming Part of a Navigational Watch" and "Lifeboatman/Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats"
- Applicants must have:
- Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
- High school diploma preferred but not required
- Reliable transportation to and from work for crew changes
- Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen, background check and Safe Gulf class
- Subject to random drug screening
- Must be capable of working offshore in harsh weather environments for periods of 3 to 6 weeks
Compensation
- Based on employee's USCG documents and type of vessel
- $280 per day
- Main schedule of 28 on, 14 off
- Free USCG STCW and upgrade classes offered at our training facility
- In-house OSV mate training program

- Travel pay based on direct distance from employee's residence to our main office
