North American Shipbuilding is seeking an experienced Naval Architect for its shipbuilding, repair and conversion facilities. Primarily serving the offshore oil and gas industry, the engineering department is responsible from the conceptual stage to the detail engineering of various vessel types. The successful candidate will join the engineering department of a company involved in design projects with various types and sizes of vessels.
Duties
- intact and damaged stability analyses including longitudinal strength and tank capacity tables
- model preparation utilizing GHS
- weight estimates
- conducting structural assessments using first principles methods and finite element analysis using ALGOR, including report writing for review by Classification Society
- preparing procedures and performing deadweght surveys and inclining experiments
- conducting rule analyses using classification society standards for ABS, USCG, SOLAS and MARPOL regulations
- contact equipment suppliers to verify dimensions and performance specifications
- develop section modulus and longitudinal strength calculations and drawings
- carry out sea trials and record noise performance, as well as maneuverability behavior of the vessel
Facility Background
North American Shipbuilding (NAS) was founded in Larose, Louisiana, in 1974, and has built more specialized offshore vessels than any other shipyard in the world. Designing and constructing vessels only for the Edison Chouest Offshore family of companies, NAS built the first U.S. Antarctic icebreaking research vessel, the largest and most powerful anchor handling vessel in the U.S. fleet, the first dynamically positioned vessel in the U.S. fleet, the world's first floating production system installation vessel, and the largest water throw capacity vessel in the U.S. fleet. NAS consistently ranks among the finest shipyards in the world, currently employing over 500 in skilled positions. NAS has a formal welding training program and on-the-job apprenticeship training for all other trades. The shipyard's health and safety program is second to none, paying tens of thousands of dollars to shipyard workers in cash safety bonuses every quarter. NAS also provides an on-site housing facility, a medical clinic, and a large, modern cafeteria to accommodate its workers.
Minimum Requirements
- bachelor's degree in naval architecture, marine engineering or equivalent
- minimum 5 years experience
- working knowledge of USCG, ABS, MARPOL and SOLAS regulations
- preferable knowledge of the following software:
- Algor or Maestro or similar
- Rhino
- AutoCad
- GHS or AutoHydro
- Excel and Word
- must be willing to relocate within a reasonable vicinity of the office; possible housing during work days can be discussed at time of interview
Compensation
NAS offers stable employment in a very volatile industry. We are not a contract outfit and only conduct in-house work. For the engineering department, we prefer direct-hire employment. Pay will be hourly and discussed at the time of interview. Our pay is commensurate with experience and very competitive with the rest of the industry. Annual bonuses are issued based on performance.
